H.E Ambassador Bader Omar Al Dafa, the Executive Director of the Global Dryland Alliance has met on April 17, 2013 with H.E Mrs. Ertharin Cousin, the Executive Director of the World Food Program (WFP) in her office in Rome.

During the meeting, both parties have discussed how the Global Dryland Alliance can benefit from the WFP long experience in crisis intervention and disaster management which affect negatively the food system mainly in low-resource countries.

Both parties have agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines the fields of future cooperation between GDA and WFP and ahead of the establishment of GDA as an international organization.

Ambassador Al Dafa met on April 18, 2013 Mrs. Khalida Bouzar, the Director Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia of the International Fund of Agricultural Development (IFAD). Ambassador Al Dafa and Mrs. Bouzar have discussed means of cooperation between GDA and IFAD, specifically the joint funding and execution of food programs.

The meeting, that took place in the IFAD headquarters in Rome, has reviewed mechanisms of innovative financing that GDA will provide to Member States.

Both parties have agreed to increase future discussions in order to establish a joint financing agreement and cooperate to execute GDA projects and programs aiming to enhance food security in dryland countries.

As part of the same international efforts, GDA Executive Director held a meeting, following IFAD’s meeting, with Mr. Carlos Den Hartog, the special advisor to the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). They both discussed means of cooperation between GDA and FAO mainly in food security related research and studies in dryland countries.

Both teams have spoken about partnership mechanisms in the field of scientific and technical research in which FAO has made great strides.
The FAO special advisor has welcomed the GDA initiative and reaffirmed that FAO will be completely supportive and cooperative to its plans.
