Global Dryland Alliance introduced to Diplomatic Corps in Doha

In the presence of directors of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Environment, the Global Dryland Alliance (GDA) hosted a dinner reception on Monday March 23, 2015 at the Diplomatic Club for the heads of diplomatic missions and representatives of international organisations in Doha.
In his remarks to the guests, GDA’s Executive Director, Ambassador Bader Al Dafa discussed how the Global Dryland Alliance initiative was introduced by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, to establish an international organisation aimed at making dryland countries food secure and contribute to peace and stability in the world.
Ambassador Al Dafa also thanked countries supporting the initiative, as well as UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, directors of UN specialised agencies who have provided their full support to the alliance. The alliance will complement existing international endeavors confronting the challenges of poverty, hunger and food insecurity in dryland countries which represent more than 40% of the globe’s surface and inhabited by third of the world’s population.
Ambassador Bader Al Dafa highlighted some of the distinctive characteristics of the Global Dryland Alliance such as the adoption of new methods in addressing all aspects of food security in dryland countries, developing strong public-private partnership, and use of innovative financing mechanisms that will help member states fund their food security programmes and projects.
Al Dafa added that GDA has pledged that its programs and projects will help member countries to improve its agriculture policies, implement the latest techniques in agriculture, irrigation, and fertilizers, adopt early detection of natural disasters and climate change, and enhance cooperation in times of emergency and crises and face price fluctuations in the world’s food markets.
Ambassador Al Dafa has informed the attendees of the dinner that a ministerial meeting that will be held in Marrakesh, Morocco end of May, to present GDA foundation Treaty to the alliance’s founding Member States and to discuss innovative financing mechanisms to fund the alliance’s programmes and projects.
